West Haldimand General Hospital (WHGH) will soon have a new piece of Lab equipment after a donation of $7,250 was made to the West Haldimand Hospital & Healthcare Foundation (WHHHF) by the 100 Women Who Care of Haldimand County. The money was raised in a single hour by the group during their November 2, 2021 meeting at the Caledonia Lions Hall. “On behalf of West Haldimand General Hospital, and all the patients this donation will impact, thank you for making local healthcare a priority, said Kim Mullins, Interim President, and CEO. “This purchase will impact local lives for the next decade and beyond. Donors like the 100 Women Who Care of Haldimand ensure people in our community will continue to have access to high-quality patient care close to home.” All proceeds from the donation will be used to purchase a new StatSpin centrifuge machine for WHGH. The StatSpin is an ultra-high-speed centrifuge that allows our Lab to process critical samples within minutes. It does this by spinning a test tube containing blood at a high speed. The WHGH lab will use the StatSpin Centrifuge to spin blood into its components – red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. It can do this in only two minutes. The lab’s previous centrifuge took 10 minutes to produce the same result. Thanks to the new centrifuge, staff will be able to perform lab testing on critical patients who will now be able to get their results faster. “The purchase of this centrifuge is vital because it enhances the high level of service we can provide to our patients,” said Patty McGillis, Laboratory Manager at WHGH. “Being able to diagnose a patient sooner could be a matter of life or death for some patients. Imagine a patient that is bleeding out, but it’s not clear why. Within two minutes, the sample is on the analyzer, and analysis is happening to measure clotting ability. Or a patient comes in feeling unwell, and you can tell in minutes that their potassium level is critically high. The physician is provided with the information needed to make the critical treatment decisions that much quicker when it really counts.” “We are so very grateful for 100 Women Who Care of Haldimand’s commitment to helping our hospital achieve quality health care for our community,” said Lisa Hostein, Executive Director of the Foundation. “This donation will help speed up wait times for results – and when you are waiting to find out your results in an emergency, every second counts. This new piece of lab equipment will help so many patients get the important answers they need.” Since 2016, members of 100 Women Who Care Haldimand have donated more than $100,000 to nearly 20 local charitable organizations. “It’s important for our group to donate to WHGH to help support the purchase of a new StatSpin machine because it will help our local residents get more accurate test results sooner, said Andrea Personnic, Co-founder of the 100 Women Who Care Haldimand. “The staff at WHGH are second to none. They are outstanding, hard-working people, but also go above and beyond when it comes to professionalism and patient care.” While the province provides funds for hospital operations, the community’s support is vital for the funding of hospital equipment.
